Construction of the new production facility at the Speyer site is progressing. With the integration of the reaction vessels, the hydrogenation plant will receive the key components for processing various raw materials and producing new product qualities.

Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 7th February, 2020 – Haltermann Carless, a part of HCS Group, and a leading supplier of high-value hydrocarbon solutions, installed two reaction vessels, that are the centrepiece of its new hydrogenation plant, at its German production site in Speyer. Using two mobile cranes, the reactors – each of them nine metres high, two metres wide and weighing 18 tons – were lifted into the existing steel structure.

Increased range of raw materials and improved product qualities

The two reaction vessels are amongst the most important units of the hydrogenation plant. They allow processing of a wider variety of raw materials and thus production of a range of products with a particularly high degree of purity, as required by various industries including pharmaceuticals and printing inks. The company also plans to bring novel products to the market going forward. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for mid-2020.

Processing of three types of raw materials

During plant operation the raw material is fed into the reaction vessels, each with a volume of 20 m³, where it is mixed with hydrogen and catalytically converted at a pressure of approx. 40 bar and a temperature varying, based on the type of raw material, between 100°C and 200°C. In the subsequent distillation process, the liquid reaction mixture is separated into different products. Three types of raw materials will be processed in the new hydrogenation plant: pentanes, which are used as blowing agents in insulation materials, naphtha, which is roughly equivalent to crude gasoline, and gas oil, which is very similar to diesel fuel.
